Caffeine's half-life isn't fixed the way it might be for a manufactured drug — it depends almost entirely on one liver enzyme, CYP1A2, which handles more than 95% of caffeine breakdown. A single common genetic variant (rs762551) splits people into roughly three groups: fast metabolizers clear caffeine in as little as 2 hours, while slow metabolizers can take 8 hours or more for the same dose to drop by half. Genetic testing companies estimate roughly half the population carries at least one slow-metabolizing allele without realizing it, which is the real explanation behind why one person can drink espresso after dinner and sleep fine while another lies awake from a noon coffee.

How does this calculator work?
This tool applies the formula Remaining = Initial × 0.5^(elapsed time ÷ half-life) to the half-life value above. Enter your amount and when it was taken, and it estimates how much is mathematically remaining right now, plotted on a chart and timeline that show real clock times rather than abstract durations, so you can see, for example, that "8:35 PM" is the dose and "9:35 PM" is one hour later, not just "1 hour."
How long does Caffeine stay in the body?
Based on a 5 hours half-life, it takes roughly five to seven half-lives for the mathematical model to reach a trace amount, generally under 2% of the original dose. Individual elimination varies with metabolism, dose, organ function, genetics, and other factors this calculation doesn't see.
Pregnancy is one of the few well-documented things that reliably extends caffeine's half-life regardless of genetics — by the third trimester it can stretch to 15 hours, which is part of why pregnancy guidelines cap caffeine intake well below the general 400mg/day FDA guidance. Smoking has the opposite effect, inducing the same CYP1A2 enzyme and cutting caffeine's half-life by roughly 50%. This calculator uses a 5-hour population-average half-life; if you know you're a slow metabolizer, are pregnant, or are a regular smoker, treat the actual clearance time as meaningfully longer or shorter than what's shown here.

Why is this only an estimate?
Real elimination depends on age, weight, liver and kidney function, genetics, and other medications, none of which this calculator can know. It applies one published half-life value to a simple decay curve rather than a personalized pharmacokinetic model.
Why does coffee affect some people so much more than others?
Largely genetics. The CYP1A2 gene variant you carry can mean a roughly four-fold difference in how fast you clear caffeine — from about 2 hours per half-life for fast metabolizers to 8 or more for slow ones — which is a bigger swing than dose size alone usually explains.
Does decaf still show up on this calculator?
Decaf coffee isn't caffeine-free; an 8oz cup typically still has a few milligrams. The presets here are for regular brewed coffee and espresso; if you're tracking decaf, enter the actual milligram amount from the label instead of using a preset.
Can this tell me when Caffeine is completely gone?
Not precisely. Exponential decay approaches zero but never mathematically reaches it. After about five to seven half-lives, the remaining amount is a trace consistent with being effectively eliminated for most practical purposes.
